Indicative estimate — based on Archon Data methodology
GB
Typical mid-market: 2,000–6,000 GB. Large enterprise: 10,000+ GB. Find yours in transaction DB02.
Cost-per-TB assumptions differ significantly by platform. HANA in-memory licensing is the most expensive to reduce.
%
Industry typical: 50–70%. Systems older than 10 years are often 65–80%. Leave at 55% if unsure.
Archiving before migration reduces data volume transferred and cuts migration duration. Select yes to see the time impact.

Indicative only. Figures are based on industry-average licensing costs and typical archivable proportions. A formal Archon Data assessment produces audit-grade numbers specific to your system within 5 working days.

How these numbers are calculated

The calculator uses the same cost-per-terabyte assumptions that underpin Archon Data client engagements. They are conservative estimates drawn from publicly available SAP licensing guidance and Archon Data project data.

Cost-per-TB assumptions

Annual licensing cost reduction per terabyte of data removed, by database platform. HANA’s in-memory model makes each terabyte significantly more expensive than row-store alternatives.

Archivable proportion

The percentage of your database that can be moved to an archive store without impacting day-to-day SAP operations. This depends on data age, legal retention periods, and which SAP modules you run.

Payback calculation

Project cost is estimated from database size using a four-tier model based on Archon Data engagement pricing. Payback is project cost divided by annual saving.

S/4HANA migration impact

Archiving before migration reduces the volume of data that must be converted, tested, and transferred. The time saving is estimated at 0.35 days per 80 GB archived, based on observed migration project data.

Cost-per-TB reference table

Database platform Annual cost per TB (estimate) Notes
SAP HANA £35,000 In-memory licensing; most sensitive to volume reduction
Oracle £12,000 Processor-based licensing; reduction benefit via smaller instances
Microsoft SQL Server £10,000 Core-based licensing; smaller footprint reduces infrastructure cost
IBM Db2 £11,000 Processor-based; benefit realised at hardware refresh or cloud right-sizing
SAP ASE / Sybase £9,000 Lower per-TB cost; commonly found in legacy ECC landscapes
Important: These figures are indicative estimates for scoping purposes only. Actual savings depend on your specific SAP contract terms, hardware configuration, cloud provider pricing, and the archiving objects applicable to your system. An Archon Data assessment replaces these estimates with numbers drawn directly from your SAP system and your commercial agreements.
